Although there was a delay in the opening of Nakumatt, a leading chain store in Kenya, a consignment of assorted products have already been shipped to the Kigali branch.

Clare Akamanzi, deputy director general of the Rwanda Investment Promotion Agency (RIEPA) said the products include electronics, food, beverages, stationary; toiletries and furniture.

Nakumatt officials announced the Kigali expansion in April this year and the opening of the supermarket was supposed to be this month, however there was a delay.

"The delay in opening was caused by operational reasons beyond our control [but] all the issues have now been streamlined and plans for the official opening are now in high gear,” Alfred Ng’ang’a, Ogilvy Public Relations in Nairobi said.

"As I write, store stocking is ongoing with a significant amount of the stock required for the opening already in country.”

The chain store promised to invest $7 million (Frw3.5 billion) in what Nakumatt management called ‘a world class supermarket.’ Approximately 60 Rwandans are to be employed.
