J.C Gasigwa/F. Rogoi (Ken) 7-5, 6-2 J. Jonas/H. Nyakabaho (ZIM)Rwanda’s top seed Jean Claude Gasigwa won singles and doubles finals in the Tanga Cement International Tennis tournament played yesterday at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, Tanzania.
In the singles final, Gasigwa ousted Tanzanian Jacob Jonas in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 to pocket $ 1000 (Rwf0.57m) prize money.
He lost the first set 6-7 but recovered to take the next two sets 6-4 6-1.
In the men’s doubles, Gasigwa paired with Kenya’s Francis Rogoi to beat Tanzania’s Jonas, who was pairing with Zimbabwe’s Hillary Nyakabaho 7-5, 6-2. Gasigwa and Rogoi shared $500 which was staked as the prize money for the doubles’ category.
Gasigwa said, “I dedicate this victory to President Paul Kagame, who has assisted me since 2003. Without his support, I personally couldn’t have excelled in this sport.”
“It’s really interesting because I have never won any tournament on a hard court,” Gasigwa told Times Sport by phone from Dar es Salaam.
The week-long tournament had attracted participants from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan Zimbabwe and the host the Tanzania.
