The U-19 national handball team that will represent Rwanda at the forthcoming African Junior Championships has been named. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 31 to 9 in OYO, Congo Brazzaville.

The final 14-member squad was named on yesterday after two weeks of intensified training in the residential camp held at ES Kigoma in Ruhango, Southern Province.

Head coach Francois Xavier Ngarambe and his assistant Anaclet Bagirishya, after picking the final team, will shift residential training from Musanze to Kigali starting on Friday.

The team will be based at Heroes’ Corner in Remera until they depart on August 30 for their maiden appearance in the continental championships.

Assistant coach, Bagirishya is confident that the selected team has the ability to do well.  “We took enough time before naming the final team and for that we are hopeful in their ability to pull off a few shocks in the tournament.”

The continental championships will also double as qualifiers for the World championships where the four semi-finalists will earn tickets for the global tournament which will be held in Brazil next year.

Rwanda is in Pool A, along with Angola, DR Congo and Algeria, while hosts and defending champions Congo Brazzaville are in Pool B together with Tunisia, Mali and Guinea Equatorial.
