THE national rugby side, Silverbacks, have vowed to eliminate Burundi in the CAR Super 16 tournament so as to earn automatic qualification to Division 5.

Silverbacks beat Burundi 20-00 in the first leg of the tournament held in Kigali last month.

This week, they will be in Bujumbura for the return leg, where a win will send the country to Division 5, according to Rwanda Rugby Federation Technical Director Jean Baptista Itanzi, who is also a member of the Silverbacks team.

He told Times Sport yesterday, “We are ready and determined to end the campaign on a successful note. We are going into the return leg with a comfortable and are aiming to pick up from where we left off last month,”

A win for Silverbacks will see Rwanda join Division 5 which has Mauritius, Reunion, Botswana, Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The African Development Trophy is a rugby Union tournament consisting of 16 teams played on the continent, formerly named the CAR Castel Beer Trophy.

The tournament contains the teams in the second tier of African rugby, below those playing in the Africa Cup. The competition is divided into north and south sections with two pools of four in each section.

The winners between Rwanda and Burundi will face the winners between Tanzania and Swaziland in the final.
