The national U23 beach volleyball men’s team made a winning start at the 2013 African Championships after beating Chad in the opening game before losing to host Kenya in the second game.

Rwanda’s team, which is compromised of National University of Rwanda right attacker Olivier Ntagengwa and Lycee de Nyanza’s Thierry Mugabo beat Chad in the first match 2-0.

But hosts Kenya proved a tougher nut to crack beating Rwanda in second match 2-1. The tournament is being held in Mombasa, Kenya and ends on Sunday. Rwanda plays their third match with pre-tournament favorite Egypt.

The women competition, which starts today, features host Kenya along with Rwanda, Uganda and Zimbabwe, who play in a round robin format and the top two will qualify for the World Championships, which will be held later this year, although the host nation is yet to be decided.

In 2012 in Lome, Togo, Rwanda’s pair of Charlotte Nzayisenga and Denyse Mutatsimpundu in U20 women category, won gold after shocking favourites South Africa 2-0 in the final.
