Islamic Call Society Organisation, an international NGO based in Qatar, has donated 45 cows worth Rwf45 million to poor families in Muhanga district, Southern Province, under the Girinka project.

The support to Rwanda’s poverty eradication initiatives was channelled through Good Windows, a local NGO.

Speaking to The New Times during the handover of the cows, Sheikh Hamad Abdel Kader, the director of Islamic Call Society Organisation, Qatar office, said his organisation had for the last one year been supporting Girinka and that, last year, they donated 100 cows to the needy in the Southern Province.

“We chose Rwanda because there are several initiatives aimed at lifting people out of poverty. By supporting Good Windows organisation, we are supporting national policies,” Kader, said, pointing out that their support also extends to the education sector in Rwanda through construction of classrooms.

“We have a plan of opening up a skills development centre in Rwanda soon as part of their support to Rwanda’s education programmes,” said Kader yesterday.

The Head of Good Windows Rwanda, Abdul Nsabimana, said beneficiaries were selected by local authorities.

The Governor of Southern Province, Alphonse Munyentwari, said the donation is a demonstration that Rwandans have made friends across the world.

“This shows that what we do here in Rwanda is appreciated worldwide. I encourage the beneficiaries to take good care of the cows so that others can also benefit,” said Munyentwari.

The handover of the cows was witnessed by the former Mufti, Sheikh Saleh Habimana who is currently the in charge of faith based organisations at Rwanda Governance Board.
