Cashless economy drive gains momentum

As part of the central bank’s effort to promote a cashless economy, commercial banks are being advised to encourage mobile banking platforms.

As part of the central bank’s effort to promote a cashless economy, commercial banks are being advised to encourage mobile banking platforms. It is in this line that Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) recently partnered with Tigo, a telecom firm, to provide mobile banking solutions to customers who have accounts with the bank. The solution will enable them to buy airtime from their mobile phones.

Paul Van Apeldoorn, the BPR acting chief executive officer, said financial institutions were working with the ICT ministry to find innovations to help the country achieve a cashless economy in the near future.

“One of our objectives is to continuously innovate and deliver time-saving, cashless solutions for clients regardless of where they are located,” Apeldoorn said during the launch of the service at the bank headquarters in Kigali.

Tigo’s Chantal Umutoni noted that the telecom firm wants to give clients easy access to other financial services through mobile phones.
