Amavubi to know AFCON 2015 opponents next year

Rwanda will know her opponents for the qualifying stages of the Orange AFCON 2015 next January, according to CAF executive committee, which convened over the weekend in Marrackech, Morocco.

The Executive Committee confirmed on the eve of the 35th Ordinary CAF General Assembly that the draw for the qualifying stages of the Orange AFCON 2015 will take place either in January or at the beginning of February 2014 in South Africa during the 3rd African Nations Championship.

A preliminary round composed of 10 teams that will go head-to-head against one another in 2-leg matches.  The 5 qualifying teams will join the other 43 teams to form 12 groups of 4 teams.

The winner from each group will qualify for a place in the final tournament in Morocco along with the 3 best second placed teams.

For the preliminary round, the CAF will make use of the FIFA rankings. As for the group stages, the CAF rankings shall be used as reference.

Because Rwanda is not one of the seeded teams, Amavubi’s quest to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations finals will begin from the preliminary round.

Amavubi will square it out against a lowly ranked opponent from the continent in a play-off to earn a place in the final round of Group stages.

The last time Rwanda qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations was way back in 2004 in the finals which were held in Tunisia.
