Tennis pair qualifies for African tourney

ERNEST Habiyambere and Oliver Havugimana will represent Rwanda at the forthcoming Africa Junior Tennis Championship in Egypt.

ERNEST Habiyambere and Oliver Havugimana will represent Rwanda at the forthcoming Africa Junior Tennis Championship in Egypt.

The pair qualified after impressing in last week’s ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Championship, which was held in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura.

Habiyambere, who won two of his three games, finished second in Pool C of the U-14 category, while Havugimana topped Pool C of the boys’ U-16 category after back to back wins over Burundi’s Ted Sindabizera (6-3 6-3) and Goodluck Mollel of Tanzania (6-3 6-2).

Jules Ndibwami and David Uwimana completed Rwanda’s four-man team. Burundi dominated the tournament after massing 585 points, Kenya (355) and Tanzania (242) finished second and third while Rwanda followed closely in fourth place with 213points.

Sudan garnered 197 points to finish 5th.
