The Rwanda Cooperative Agency (RCA) was, last month, registered as a member of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), joining the select list of 15 countries in Africa.
In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Damien Mugabo, the Director General of RCA said that the membership was approved during the General Assembly of ICA which took place in Cancun city in Mexico where some officials from RCA were present.
“Being a member of ICA is crucial because it will facilitate sharing information between RCA and other ICA members from all over the world where we can share best practices, which is very helpful in growth and promotion of our activities, ” Mugabo said.
He said that that being a member of ICA will enable RCA to improve capacity building among local cooperatives through increased training facilities which will be offered by the organisation.
Mugabo added Rwandan cooperatives will be in better position to acquire financial support from ICA.
There are over 4,500 cooperatives in the country up from 3,000, six years ago.
ICA was established in 1895 to provide effective and efficiency global voice and forum for knowledge, expertise and coordinated action for and about cooperatives.
ICA has over 250 member organisations from 100 countries.
