Two Congolese nationals, Bruno Ntabwoba and Christian Birindwa, are being held at Gisenyi Police Station for allegedly minting fake dollars.

The duo was rounded up by police at Gisenyi town’s Auberge Hotel where they had rented a room.

“We were able to net them thanks to our informers who knew about this mission,” said Theos Badege, the police spokesperson.

Both suspects claimed to be teachers working in Kigali, but neither of them could tell which subject or school they teach in, raising more suspicion.

Police recovered paper material and ink believed to be used for making the fake currency.

Badege said the suspects will be produced in court to answer the charges.

“The principle of free movement of people and goods should not be abused by criminals since our laws allow us to prosecute criminals of foreign nationals,” Badege warned.

Badege also cautioned the society to be vigilant, saying there were similar but isolated cases especially among the youth.
