RESIDENTS of Kigali city will start getting new electronic identity cards in May, Pascal Nyamurinda the Coordinator of the National Identity Card Project has said.
Nyamurinda revealed this in an interview yesterday at the Ministry of Local Government in Kacyiru
The exercise began in February this year with Nyarugenge followed by Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts.
Nyamurinda explained that a total of 495,000 people had their photos taken for the new electronic identity cards in Kigali city and those who had missed the exercise would be considered next month. He continued that the production and printing process of the new identity cards would be completed this month.
“The distribution process will start with Nyarugenge followed by Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts,” added the official. He explained that the distribution process would follow the same procedure as the photography exercise.
“We want all people in the country who had their photos taken to get their IDs by September before the election of Members of Parliament,” he said.
He urged all people in Kigali city who had not paid for the IDs to do so to enable easy issuing of their ID cards. Each person will have to pay Frw500 to get an ordinary ID.
Presently the exercise had been successfully completed in eight districts including some in the Southern Province. He added that the exercise would soon go to the Western Province, Northern Province and then the Eastern Province.
A total of 9,043,580 people registered for the national Identity Cards countrywide.
