It’s good to hear that the process of shifting responsibility to regulate the media from the government to practitioners is going on well, following the election of an eight-member committee that will oversee the process.
In the developed world, the duty to regulate the media is entirely left in the hands of professional practicing journalists.
The move is a good gesture but I would like to appeal to the committee to be transparent.
I expect to see a media professional body composed of practicing journalists. We have had cases in the past where people heading journalists’ bodies or their advocates are quacks.
Practicing journalists know what they go through daily and should be the very people nominated to this body. People who were journalists at one point and quit the professional should give way to legitimate journalists.
