Editor,

I would like to congratulate the Rwanda National Police for having managed to arrest the fertilizer smugglers in our area. Our government is trying everything to improve the well being of Rwandans through providing fertilizers to farmers so that the country’s food security is sustainable.

We are all aware that Rwanda’s economy is largely based on agricultural production where over 90 percent of the Rwandan population are farmers.

So to improve the living conditions of Rwandans, one needs to consider the local population, majority of who are farmers. It is in this regard that farmers were provided with free incentives ranging from sensitization and access to affordable fertilizers.

It is a ridiculous, absurd and actually an insensitive idea that some people should think of stealing government’s donated fertilizers initially meant for farmers just to meet their personal needs.

Fertilizer smugglers and other people with similar ideas need to be brought before justice. If such wrong business is not monitored, the country’s targets, including some of the MDGs would not be easily achieved

The recent arrest of two men suspected of producing hundreds of counterfeit documents was a tremendous effort that will reduce the rate of fraudsters in the various professions.

Allow me take this opportunity to urge the general public to cooperate with police by reporting any cases of criminal behavior.
