MUHANGA-Students in Muhanga District have committed to play an active role in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The students, from various schools, made the pledge during an awareness campaign on the MDGs in the district.
The campaign drew students, local leaders and officials of Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) - Rwanda, with participants marching through Gitarama town with messages on banners.

The participating schools also held football matches dubbed ‘kick out poverty’ where the winners were rewarded with cash prizes.

“Youth awareness is profound in implementation of the MDGs. Such campaigns are aimed at disseminating knowledge and call onto individuals and communities to act,” said René Niyonteze, GCAP coordinator.
MP Jean Claver Rwaka, hailed the students for outstanding sports discipline.

“Acting smart should be the goal for our youth today so as to have responsible future leaders who will use this awareness and knowledge to ensure education for all, fight HIV/Aids, and eliminate poverty and disease.”

Kabgayi Technical School (Eteka) beat Petit Seminaire St. Leon 6-3 to emerge in top position. It walked away with a GCAP Trophy and Rwf50,000 cash prize.

ACEJ Karama and Gs Shogwe were awarded prizes in second and third positions respectively. The students called for more training, education and awareness on the MDGs- which include eradicating poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality and women empowerment, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/Aids, malaria, and other diseases.
