It is 21 years since more than a million innocent people were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The perpetrators targeted everyone — children, women and men of all ages. People were killed from their homes, schools and churches. But even more shocking was the fact that some students did not hesitate to massacre their classmates.
After 100 days, the Genocide was stopped thanks to the Rwanda Patriotic Front. But the genocidaires were not yet done. If they couldn’t win militarily then they would export their poisonous ideology to schools as a parliamentary probe committee set up to investigate Genocide ideology in schools would later confirm.
However, after continuous sensitization programmes in schools through anti-genocide clubs, this ideology has been defeated. This success though should not breed complacency on the part of the Government, Civil Society, teachers, parents and learners. The only way to consolidate the achievements is by continuously preaching against genocide.
