England won the RCA 6s Expatriate Cricket six-a-side tournament held at Kicukiro cricket ground with an unbeaten record on Sunday. England beat Pakistan in the final by 2 runs to clinch the local inaugural tournament.
Expatriates living in Rwanda from eight countries including England, Pakistan, South Africa, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and India took part in the one-day event.
The tournament was organised to mark the end of the 2015 International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup that was hosted and won by Australia after defeating co-hosts New Zealand in the final.
England’s Marcus Scaramanga (3 wickets & 79 runs) and Iriho Veronique (1 wicket & 28 runs) were named the best male and female player respectively.
“Hosting this tournament was a dream come true,” said Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) general manager, Joshua Mwanja, who was also the tournament coordinator. The former Uganda international added, “This is one of the social events on our 2015 calendar purposely to create awareness, increase our participation and involvement numbers, and have fun within the cricket circles.”
Apart from the highly entertaining games, the crowd of over 200 spectators enjoyed music, drinks and different kinds of foods that spiced up the event.
Mwanja also revealed that in July, RCA plans to organize a corporate league in which 20 companies will be expected to participate. This competition is aimed at enticing the corporate community into local cricket.
In his closing remarks, RCA president Charles Haba congratulated all teams for participating in the tournament and thanked the sponsors Narayan Uniforms & Sports, East African Breweries Ltd, Drop water, UAE Exchange and Zaaffran Restaurant for supporting the event.
