RUSIZI -The Japanese government, through UNICEF, has donated over Rwf950million to Rusizi district to help rehabilitate the schools that were damaged by an earthquake that devastated the area in 2008.
This was revealed Tuesday by the district Mayor, Fabien Sindayiheba, in an interview with The New Times.
“As you are aware, several primary and secondary schools were destroyed and others seriously damaged by the earthquake. So, the donation is meant to rehabilitate and construct of new ones,” he said.
The Mayor disclosed that they would rehabilitate 56 classrooms and construct 50 new ones by May in several sectors of the district.
According to Sindayiheba, some pupils still study under tents because their classrooms were destroyed by the earthquake.
The donation comes at a time when a senatorial committee is probing the coordination and failure of relief efforts to help victims of disasters in the Western Province.
