Judiciary is accountable to citizens – Busingye

The president of the High Court, Johnston Busingye has said that the justice sector in Rwanda other than in most other African countries is answerable and accountable to the citizens. Busingye said this yesterday during the weekly town hall meeting that took place at Telecom House. “We hold a judicial week every year and during this week, we get in touch with the people and listen to their complaints and also let them tell us where we have gone wrong which helps us to improve our work,” said Busingye. Busingye said that a justice sector that listens to the people and tries hard to make right its wrongs helps in building a country that is governed by the rule of law. “The rule of law in a country facilitates the creation of a peaceful society that has security which is also the backbone of development,” he said. He added that a focused justice system creates a good investment climate since investors are assured of getting justice in case of any problems in their investments which is a much desirable factor especially in times like these when Rwanda subscribes to many competitive economic blocs. Busingye also said that the justice sector has been successful in reducing a backlog of cases in the last five years through increasing the number of judges and avoiding bad practices like unnecessary postponement of hearings. He said Rwanda has the smallest backlog of cases in the region which shows a big stride the sector has taken since the reforms that started in 2004. Ends
