RWANDA’s national football governing body Ferwafa, is in talks with Bralirwa to sponsor the 2010 national football league, Time Sport can exclusively reveal.
With five matches into the new league season, Ferwafa had failed to get any sponsors for the 2009-10 campaign.
However, according to a document seen by Time Sport, the brewery has agreed to enter talks with the federation for the purposes of striking a new sponsorship deal for local football.
“Bralirwa requests Ferwafa to consider our serious intention to sponsor Rwandan 2010 Premier league, however we wish to further discuss on a good and mutually beneficial sponsorship package so as to propel Rwandan football to new heights in the coming years” the document reads in part.
Federation boss, Brig. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura told this paper recently that they had failed to acquire the sponsor in time for the start of the league, but remains optimistic that the problem will be solved in due course.
The league has gone without a sponsor in the last three years, stretching the federation’s budget while making the championship less competitive.
If the talks bear fruits, Primus will become the institutional sponsor of the Rwanda National League, the top football championship league, organised by the Rwanda Football federation (Ferwafa). The Championship will thus be called the “Primus National League”.
Bralirwa recently sponsored the Fifa World Cup trophy tour of Rwanda where its brand, Coca-Cola gave Rwandans a memorable experience.
Primus sponsored the league during the 2004-05 season before pulling out due to yet to be known reasons.
Meanwhile, Ferwafa election will take place on Sunday but till now, no candidate has come out to express interest in contesting against the incumbent, who has been in charge for the last four years.
