NYAMAGABE – District mayor, Alphonse Munyentwari has said measures have been put in place to check the recent incidents that claimed six lives.
Nyamagabe district has of recent seen isolated incidences where people have been killed because of family disputes.
Last week, in Gasaka sector, a woman only identified as Francoise was killed by her lover on suspicion of committing adultery.
The incident happened weeks after a senior six candidate; Jacqueline Uwimana, 23 was killed by one Nkundimana alias Gakara, a taxi tout who claimed to have acted under the influence of alcohol.
The two incidents follow another murder incident in Buruhukiro sector where Stephanie Nyirantiruswa and her three children; Innocent Sikubwabo, 9 months, Jean de Dieu Nkundimana, 5 and Evariste Nzabonimpaye, 8 were killed by close family members.
In an interview with The New Times, the mayor said the district authorities have put in place proactive measures to curtail any such incidents in future.
“We have started mapping families with suspected cases of conflict with the intention of resolving their differences,” he said.
“We are also encouraging local communities to always be vigilant and report any suspected cases of disputes in homes to authorities so that they can act before the situation goes out of hand.”
Munyentwari noted that the district earlier this year launched a campaign to get children off the streets many of whom have been a menace in the town.
“We have so far taken 100 children off the streets, 25 of these have been helped to form a cooperative which does cleaning work,” the mayor said.
“We are optimistic that with these measures and with the support from the local population we will be able to stop this,” he added.
