Amavubi return home today
ZAMBIA head coach Herve Renard has backed his side to oust Amavubi when the two sides meet in a do or die 2010 Africa Nations Cup qualifier in Kigali next month.
According to Zambia mail, Renard said while reacting to Rwanda’s 3-1 defeat to group leaders Algeria in Blida over the weekend that a victory in Kigali is crucial.
“We know now what Zambia need to do to go to Angola,” Renard said.
Technically, a draw or a 1-0 loss is all Zambia needs to consolidate third place in Group C and secure a ticket to next year’s CAN.
Despite losing their last two fixtures, the Chipolopolo are still in third place with four points from five games.
But these results have not gone down well with Zambia’s Sports deputy minister Dr Christopher Kalila.
It is reported that Kalila has started asking questions especially after Saturday’s home defeat (0-1) against Egypt.
“As government, we are disappointed because we expected a good run. We did all we could in mobilising resources so we expected a much better run than what we have had,” he said.
Kalila said it will be regrettable if Zambia don’t beat Rwanda next month.
While a World Cup place has always eluded Zambia, the country has been to 13 Africa Cup tournaments, failing only once in 2004 since 1982.
Amavubi, who return this afternoon are at the foot of the group with a point.
