Water, sanitation project launched

BURERA - Over 200,000 residents in Burera District are set to benefit from the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project (WASH), which has been launched in the district.

The US$21 million project was launched recently by the Executive Secretary of the Northern Province, Deo Kabagambe, in Gatebe sector.

The project will be jointly funded by the Governments of Rwanda  and that of  Netherlands- and coordinated by the United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and Shyira Diocese.

“The aim of WASH is to increase access to safe water through facilitating better modes of basic hygiene within society,” the officials say.

According to the officials, about 100 000 residents will get access to safe water; while over 100 000 others will benefit from pit latrines to be construction during the project implementation.

The pit latrines will be constructed at the selected schools and health centers, the officials say.
