Primus National Football League champions APR Fc have beaten off stiff challenge from rivals Rayon Sports and Atraco Fc to retain their title.
Going into the last day of the campaign level with Rayon at the top of the table on 56 points but with a superior goal difference of one goal, the title was always going to go to the team that scores the most goals on the final day.
And so the military side proved why they deserved a ninth title in 13 seasons by thrashing relegated Zebra 0-8 in Byumba.
A feast of goals from Kabange Twite (4), Andre Lomami (3) and Abbas Rassou (1) was by far what their team needed to retain the title.
APR’s ninth league title ensured their participation in next year’s African Champions League.
While goals were all over the place in Byumba, at Amahoro stadium, Rayon could only settle for a slim 1-0 win over Police thanks to a second half penalty courtesy of the league leading marksman Bokota Labama.
The military side won this year’s league title while tied 59 points with rivals Rayon but with a superior goal difference staggering eight goals.
APR last won the title last year under Capt. Jean Marie Ntagwabira and have managed to successfully defend it under new coach Andy Mfutila.
The league completes an unprecedented treble for the military side after bagging the Primus Cup in December , Kagame/Cecafa Club championship in January and the Amahoro Cup trophy just over a month ago.
Rayon could join APR as Rwanda’s representative in the Caf Confederations Cup.
The blues who last won the league trophy in 2004 had reorganized themselves at the start of the second leg with an aim of winning this year’s trophy but all was not fruitful.
But all isn’t doom and one at Rayon because they produced the league’s top scorer in Bokota who netted 14 times in just ten outings; he finished one goal ahead of APR’s Kabange who featured in all his team’s 26 league games.
Elsewhere, third placed Mukura beat Etincelles 1-0 at Huye stadium while Umurabyo lost to Atraco by the same margin in Rwamagana.
Relegation Jeunesse went down 0-2 against Kiyovu while AS-Kigali recorded beat Kibuye 1-0 to brighten their chances of avoiding relegation.
Marine defeated Espoir 1-0 but their chances of escaping the relegation zone are slim despite their one game in hand against Atraco.
Already relegated is Zebra, Jeunesse and Espoir and they will be joined by either Marines or AS-Kigali both of who still have a game in hand. Ends
