The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) is the first Open and Distance Learning (ODL) public institution of higher learning in Tanzania. It offers most of its programmes through blended learning that consists of limited face to face teaching and extensive self-driven learning by distance.
The Open University of Tanzania has five faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Business Management, Education, Law, and Science. In addition, there are two institutes that are involved in academic matters: Institute of Continuing Education and Institute of Education Technology.
The university has a total cumulative enrolment of over 100,000 students in its various non-degree and degree programmes. Although the OUT started with largely undergraduate programmes, it is now the university with the highest postgraduate enrolment in Tanzania. Currently, there are more than 15000 candidates enrolled in various postgraduate programmes.
