Today, it is used as the main defence weapon of any country, state or sovereign entity. A gun has been very influential in ensuring the security of thousands of people around the globe, though there are thousands of people who innocently lost their lives to it. This is how it was invented from a firearm to handgun: The first device or lock for mechanically firing a gun is the matchlock in1400s, but before they were invented, guns were fired using a burning wick to a touch hole in the barrel igniting the power inside. A shooter uses one hand for firing, and a prop to steady the gun. In 1498, a wheel lock was invented, and preferred over a match lock because it didn’t need a wick to keep it lit and hence more reliable. Then in 1950, a wheel lock pistol was manufactured for Emperor Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria. In the 1750s, men stopped carrying rapiers and guns became the weapon of choice. Guns were then employed until a true duelling pistol was officially standardised in the 1770s. Then, Samuel Colt developed the first mass-produced, multi-shot, revolving firearms by applying industrial age machining tools to the idea. This made it more affordable to certain fighters and defence groups. During the American civil war, Spencer repeating guns were technically advanced and used cartridges hence firing 7 shots in 15 seconds, but the army didn’t want repeating guns though President Lincoln objected that in 1863 and his objection led to the purchase of 107,372 spencer repeating carbines and rifles and the spencer became the principal repeating gun of the Civil war. After that, the Winchester rifles went more viral, and they were affordable hence winning the term, “The gun that won the west”. It then introduced the repeating guns and the first automatic rifle. The first automatic pistol was created by Joseph Laumann in 1892 but the Borchardt pistol of 1893 was the first automatic with a separate magazine in the grip. More automatics came successively in a row including Luger, Mauser, and colt models.
