Orchestra Impala was one of the most popular bands in the 70s through to the 90s. The band recorded and released several albums and won thousands of hearts across the region. Even though Urabaruta (You Are Better Than Them) was released several decades ago, this song is still very popular among Rwandan music fans. The fact that the song is usually reproduced live on stage by most local bands attests to its huge popularity. Urabaruta is a love song sung from the heart. It’s so soft on the ears and you don’t have to understand the lyrics to like it – the trumpet, guitar and drums conspire to produce an amazing song. Unfortunately, most Orchestra Impala members died in the grotesque 1994 Genocide. However, the surviving members recently revived the band and are now putting the pieces together.
