Construction of Ugandan Chancery in Kigali begins

Uganda has started construction of a new High Commission chancery building in Kigali that will cost US$3.5 million (Rwf2.2 billion). The ground breaking ceremony was held on Friday and was graced by Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa, the Permanent Secretary in Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mary Baine, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Rwanda Richard Kabonero as well as other government officials from both countries.While addressing the gathering at the construction site in Kacyiru, minister Kuteesa said that the new construction was a clear indication of the existing strong bilateral cooperation between two ‘sister countries’. “Its shows our permanent stay in Rwanda. Our relationship has now greatly warmed up and its a clear manifestation of strong cooperation,” he said.Baine, who represented the Foreign Affairs minister Louise Mushikiwabo promised that government, would provide all the necessary support for the construction of the chancery. She said embassies and High commissions owning their own premises was critical, adding that they had agreed in East African Community that countries should invest more in their embassies.“It’s an important landmark, having a project like this. It’s a clear indication that you’re attached to your embassy here in Kigali. Rwanda government will provide support to make this project a success,” she said.Uganda’s High commission is currently located in Nyarutarama.
