Rwandans urged to preserve culture

The Rector of Ruhengeri Institute of Higher Education, Rev. Dr. Deogratias Niyibizi, has urged Rwandans to embrace development without losing their identity. Addressing journalists and stakeholders at the ongoing Cultural Week at Amahoro National Stadium, Niyibizi, said; “there are values that identify us and we should endeavor not to lose them.” “We are evolving and changing, we should learn from others but we should never lose our identity as Rwandans,” he said adding that it should not however be an obstacle towards embracing other cultures.He urged the media to learn the basics of the Kinyarwanda language and culture so as not to mislead their audience. “Journalists are perceived as role models out there, therefore you should accept to be challenged despite our troubled history. You should not entirely use foreign languages; make it a point to learn your native language. Journalists are like teachers, whatever they air or publish should not contradict with the Rwandan culture,” Niyibizi emphasised. It was recommended that Kinyarwanda be taught at all levels of education and media owners play a major role in following up on the content that is aired or published. Lillian Uwineza, a presenter at Radio Flash, also recommended that an association of cultural journalists be formed. “The association can follow up and advise journalists on content concerning Rwandan cultural values and norms,” she advised. The week long event was organised by the Ministry of Sports and Culture under the theme; “Our Culture, the cornerstone of our development”
