It doesn’t workIn the movies, torture is the way to go because I’m always dying to see that bad guy get exactly what he deserves. But this is the real world, not a movie! I’d like to say it is never reasonable but then again, if a bomb was going to go off and kill innocent people, and they had the person who knew the location of the bomb but wasn’t talking, would I still think there was time for chit chat or begging the culprit to give up the location of that bomb? Maybe not.However, such episodes are rare therefore I can’t say in good conscience that torture is never justifiable. It’s just that torture doesn’t work. People will say whatever they think you want them to say just to get the pain to stop. It’s as simple as that.From a practical standpoint, it invalidates assertions, creating “evidence” that cannot be used in a court of law because evidence gained through torture is often vague or fallacious. How can anyone trust the words of someone whose toe is about to get chopped off or has a gun to the head? Apparently, two men being tortured in Guantanamo Bay confessed to being the two men in a video featuring Osama Bin Laden. After confessing, it turned out they were innocent!People talk about freedom and human rights with so much energy, then don’t find it odd to stoop down to a barbaric and inhumane level. Many innocent people find themselves in this kind of trouble for reasons such as mistaken identity, being framed or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time!How many innocents have faced the wrath of the death penalty? The saddest thing about realising someone’s innocence after they are dead is that no compensation will ever bring them back. If suspects are tortured just because they look like they belong to a terrorist group only to find out they are just as scared of these terrorists as other people, seriously, what good will an apology or money in compensation do?To torment tormenters just makes us monsters on the other side of the table – savages to say the least. It makes us bloodthirsty cowards – harming anyone rendered helpless is cowardly and only breeds more violence. Personally, I would say just about anything to stop a guy from poking a pin through my ear! In the end, all you have is a false confession and no clue what to do next. Governments should think of stronger ways to protect their nations without doing the exact thing they despise another person for.
