Counselling is a better option. I was still trying to figure out how to punish a corpse when a colleague kindly pointed out that unsuccessful attempts are the ones that face the wrath of the law in some countries. I know some people take their issues to another level and think that death is the only way out but I have to say, suicide –literally - is not cowardly.I read about a woman in Uganda who slit her own throat because of some ‘man drama’. Okay, honestly, if you are going to kill yourself (and in such a way) the least you can do is have a solid reason! I once cut my thumb while chopping veggies and the pain was out of this world – I don’t know how I’d work up the courage to slit my own throat!I honestly wouldn’t wish for anyone to leave this world prematurely but you see, once again, this is up to an individual. As long as they are not suicide bombers – taking as many lives with them as possible- the law really has no business there.Seeing as it’s their own life, people should do whatever the hell they want with it. Waste it, live it, or do something great with it, it’s all up to an individual. The law should never revoke control over the choice of staying alive - it’s the most basic human right.Will making it a crime punishable by law decrease suicide rates? How does one fear the law if they know they are going to die? The way I see it that will only motivate someone into making sure failure isn’t an option! And if indeed they succeed, it brings me back to my original question, who will they punish – a corpse?Even if I threw myself off a 10-storied building and survived, I’d probably suffer permanent brain damage or paralysis which would make me a vegetable - what good am I in jail? As long as I don’t make a show of myself when jumping off that building – traumatizing other people in the process – it really has nothing to do with the law.What is suitable for an individual does not apply to everyone. Other than the woman who slit her throat over a man, let us not be too quick to judge because some people have issues the size of China! All people do is judge and wonder why someone would end their life but until you walk a mile in their shoes, do not assume you understand even a third of their issues. Besides, an individual in such a desperate state hardly stops to consider the fact that they are breaking the law. I highly doubt they even care – after all, when all is done, they will be dead! Seriously, it’s my life. I know it’s selfish but if no one else is murdered by me then surely what is the problem?I know this would make more sense if Rwanda still had the death penalty but maybe we could make a twist on the concept and say people who attempt suicide but fail have committed a criminal offense that is punishable by the death penalty. There, you end up with a win / win situation. Society gets rid of a “criminal” and the suicidal person is rid of this life of suffering. I’m just saying!Seriously though, these people need help, not a criminal record. Good counselling services should be available for the failed attempts. And who knows, with someone non-judgemental to talk to, even the ones still contemplating it might just sign up for a session or two and realize that there are other solutions to their problems.
