DRC conflict: The truth will come out

Editor,Allow me to respond to an article that appeared in yesterday’s issue of The NewTimes titled “US aid cut ‘based on misinformation’. I know US’s move is based on the UN report, which was lacking and with no evidence against Rwanda.Contrary to what UN experts stated in the report, I see Rwanda government very committed to help Eastern DRC get peace. It was therefore shocking when I read that the U.S. government was to cut this year’s planned military assistance to Rwanda amid concerns that the government in Kigali is supporting a rebel movement in neighbouring Congo.It is very surprising how anyone can think that Rwanda would want to drag herself through this mess in the DRC at a time when she is making tremendous, internationally-recognised progress both domestically and internationally. It is also disappointing that serious questions are not being asked about the UN Mission in DRC. How is it that smaller, less expensive AU/UN missions in Darfur and Somalia have achieved so much more, with so much less money, against arguably tougher odds? Sadly, it is rather typical of the bloated, inefficient, ineffective, exorbitant and unaccountable bureaucracy that often plagues the UN. Keep moving forward, Rwanda! Norman M.New York, USA
