Handball federation to honour fallen players

IN a bid to commemorate former handball players who passed on during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi, the local sports governing body, Ferwahand is currently compiling information about players throughout the country who were killed during the mayhem. The federation’s secretary Anaclet Bagirishya said that several personnel have been deployed in provinces to make sure the association receives accurate information.“The process will take some time but we shall have received some information at least within two months, then we can plan for a memorial tournament that will feature local teams in remembrance of these fallen players,” Augustin Hakizimana and Agatha Kayirege who featured for Nyakabanda handball men and women’s clubs are some of the players that will be remembered at the tournament to be held later in the year.Bagirishya further added that, “As we honour the victims of the Genocide, FERWAHAND reaffirms its commitment to use handball as a channel of unity and reconciliation”Meanwhile, the reigning Rwanda Cup winners Police have pulled out of this year’s Africa cup winners’ cup due April 19-30 in Tunis, Tunisia.Police’s head coach Alphonse Udahemuka revealed that, “We are not going to Tunisia for the continental tournament because we are facing financial constraints. We needed €2500 (Rwf2m) and we failed to raise it.”Like has been the case in recent years, Rwanda will not be represented this year owing to financial constraints. In 2011, APR failed to make it to the same event that was held in Yaounde, Cameroon and KIE failed to travel to Kaduna, Nigeria for the Africa Championships.Meanwhile, the National Championships will resume on April 21 with KIE hosting APR and National University of Rwanda (NUR) is expected to host reigning champions Police in Butare.
