Upholding quality vital for universities

The Boards of Directors of all institutions of higher learning have been urged to play an active role in improving the quality of education. The call was made by the Minister of Education while meeting the heads of boards of both private and public universities in the country. The governing boards of the institutions are central to the learning environment and hence the quality of education. Through the boards, the universities can also be linked to the corporate world and other partners. Collaborative efforts at different levels and with several partners, when adopted and mainstreamed into our institutions of higher learning, can indeed help improve the quality of our graduates, and prepare them for the labour market. The government has already taken commendable steps towards providing a firm education foundation, by promoting basic education. Universities will have to build on that to produce quality and capable graduates, who will meet the challenges of the country’s development agenda. Stakeholders, like governing boards, should also play a leading role in fostering international partnership and collaboration for our universities, in order to transform them into centres of excellence and modern research.
