Handball federation readies for Challenge Trophy

The national handball federation, Ferwahand is gearing up to host the the women’s IHF Challenge Trophy Continental Phase for Africa from May 21-28 in Kigali. The federation’s secretary general Alfred Twahirwa told Times Sport on Sunday that the week-long tournament will attract zonal champions across the continental and the winner will compete in world edition whose venue has not been decided. “We were honored to host a continental tournament. The federation is working around the clock to ensure that everything is ready in time for the start of the tournament,” said Twahirwa. Ferwahand needs Rwf 24 million to ensure a successful event management and team’s preparations. However the local federation has been boosted by support from the international handball federation which will fund for team’s airfares as well as accommodation in Kigali during the duration of the event. According to the federation official, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Senegal, Congo Brazzaville and hosts Rwanda will battle for continental silverware whose winner will represent the continental in World finals. But Twahirwa is optimistic that as hosts, Rwanda will leave no stone unturned to make sure the trophy stays here. “This is a challenge for our team since we are hosting experienced and leading nations in handball. “We will be playing in-front of our home fans, which I believe will give us an added advantage to win the tournament. Our aim is to qualify for the world finals,” added Twahirwa. Ends
