But she's not as sad as she might have been a year ago because she's been thinking about celebrating Galentine's Day with her ‘gal pals.’ When she first heard about it, she’d assumed that everyone was simply misspelling Valentine's, but she soon discovered that Galentine's is the latest craze. Galentine's Day, celebrated on February 13, originated from the popular TV show 'Parks and Recreation'. The day is all about declaring love and affection to the girls who make up your support system. Put simply, Galentine's is Valentine's – for “girls” (gals). Galentine's Day is a celebration of friendship and the people who support you as romantic relationships come and go. That is, it can be celebrated with any and all friends, whether they are in other romantic relationships or not, regardless of their gender or orientation. ALSO READ: Love month: Planning a proposal? The word galentine was first introduced to the world during a February, 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation. In the hit comedy, Leslie Knope, the fictional deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department said, “What’s Galentine's Day? Oh, it's only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas. As with Valentine's Day on February 14, many people choose to shower their friends with gifts and treats on February 13th as a symbol of gratitude for being a great friend. Galentine’s Day is usually celebrated with the girls in someone’s life, whether a sister, mother or friend. Activity-wise, brunch is the most traditional event on Galentine’s Day, due to the Parks and Recreation episode. But, as it can be expected, each year, more and more people get creative and choose other activities to do with their friends. From movie nights, sleepovers, spa trips, painting, to cooking lessons. Really, no activity is off limits. Although red and white are more associated with Valentine's Day, there is no set color scheme for Galentine's Day. Consolation for those who may be feeling down on February 14 is one of the reasons this day has been observed. While Galentine’s gives off the impression that only females can celebrate, that doesn’t need to be the case. ‘Malentine's’ Day is another term for when men celebrate each other. Malentine’s day is also celebrated on February 12, despite being less popular than the other two days. The idea, however, is for men to get together and celebrate their amazing friendships.
