The City of Kigali's decision to temporarily close five commercial facilities for failing to comply with fire safety standards is a decisive step that other districts should emulate. Coming amid a series of destructive fire outbreaks, the move shows the importance of enforcing safety regulations before disaster strikes. The closures, which took effect on October 31, follow recent fires that gutted premises housing Sport Light Lounge in Kabeza and damaged several businesses at Gisozi Trading Centre. Earlier, on October 10, a devastating blaze engulfed GIOCO Plaza, the largest market in Musanze District, destroying property and disrupting livelihoods. These incidents are painful reminders of the devastating consequences of inadequate fire preparedness. They also raise serious questions about whether enough is being done to ensure that commercial establishments comply with basic safety requirements. ALSO READ: Musanze market blaze raises questions over fire safety preparedness Kigali's intervention sends a clear message that public safety must take precedence over commercial interests. While closing businesses inevitably causes temporary inconvenience and financial losses, allowing unsafe premises to operate poses far greater risks to lives, investments and livelihoods. However, such enforcement should not be limited to the capital. District authorities across the country must follow Kigali's example by conducting comprehensive inspections of markets, shopping centres, factories and other commercial facilities. Where serious safety deficiencies are identified, corrective action must be mandatory, and closure should remain an option until compliance is achieved. The recent Musanze market fire exposed troubling concerns about overcrowding, inadequate water supplies, limited firefighting equipment and expired safety gear. These are risks that proactive inspections and proper enforcement should help address before another tragedy occurs. The Private Sector Federation (PSF) equally has a critical role to play. As the umbrella organisation representing businesses, it should actively sensitise its members about fire safety obligations and encourage investments in prevention measures, including functional firefighting equipment, accessible emergency exits and regular staff training. Fire safety should never be viewed merely as a regulatory burden. It is an essential investment in business continuity, employee welfare and the protection of customers. Ultimately, inspections must be consistent, enforcement must be firm, and compliance must become the norm rather than the exception. The recent fires should serve as a wake-up call to every district and business operator. Preventing the next disaster requires action today, not expressions of regret after another building has gone up in flames.
