When Jean Jules Mugisha completed his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) programme at the University of Kigali (UoK) in 2017, he could hardly have imagined how significantly the qualification would shape his career. Today, Mugisha serves as Head of Finance at BioNTech Rwanda, a biopharmaceutical company involved in vaccine manufacturing. His journey from professional accounting training to Ernst & Young (EY) and subsequently BioNTech illustrates how professional qualifications can open doors to career opportunities. “Initially, I didn’t realise that this qualification would open the door to so many incredible opportunities so soon. Shortly after completing my CPA, I was employed by Ernst & Young as an auditor. I later joined BioNTech Rwanda, where I currently serve as Head of Finance. Looking back, I can confidently say that pursuing this qualification was a significant step in my professional journey,” Mugisha said. His experience reflects a growing reality in today's labour market: while academic degrees remain important, specialised skills, professional qualifications and continuous learning are increasingly essential for career advancement. As Rwanda strengthens its position as a regional hub for investment, financial services and innovation, the demand for professionals equipped with industry-relevant competencies continues to grow. Through its School of Professional and Executive Programmes (SPEP), the University of Kigali is responding to this need by providing students, graduates and working professionals with opportunities to strengthen their expertise and pursue recognised professional qualifications. Bridging education and industry The changing workplace demands more than theoretical knowledge. Accountants must contribute to strategic decisions, procurement specialists navigate complex supply chains, and managers adapt to technological and organisational change. Through SPEP, UoK offers professional training in accounting, finance, procurement, management, technology, data analytics and quality management. Among its flagship offerings is the CPA programme, which develops competencies in financial reporting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance and strategic leadership. According to Prof. George Kimathi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kigali, professional education is critical to preparing individuals for emerging opportunities. “Our professional programmes are designed to equip learners with the in-demand skills and expertise needed to thrive in today’s competitive global labour market. We invite students and professionals across various sectors to enrol in these programmes and take the next step towards advancing their careers,” Prof. Kimathi said. He also emphasised the importance of continuous professional development as Rwanda advances its ambition to become a regional financial hub. Expanding professional opportunities Beyond CPA, SPEP offers a diverse portfolio of professional qualifications across several disciplines. In accounting and finance, these include Certified Investment and Financial Analyst (CIFA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Foundations in Accountancy (FIA), Accounting Technician Diploma (ATD), Certified Accounting Technician (CATR) and Certificate in Accounting and Management Skills (CAMS). Programmes in procurement, governance and management include Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), Certified Procurement & Supply Professional (CPSP-K), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Public Finance Manager (CPFM), Certified Secretaries (CS) and Certified Credit Professionals (CCP). Technology and specialised professional offerings include Diploma in Data Management and Analytics (DDMA), Diploma in Computer Networks and System Administration (DCNSA), Diploma in Quality Management (DQM), Certified Information Systems Solution Expert (CISSE), Certified Quality Professional (CQP) and Certified Forensic Fraud Examiner (CFFE). These programmes provide pathways for learners to develop practical competencies and pursue qualifications associated with relevant professional bodies and certification frameworks. Mugisha's career progression demonstrates the opportunities that can emerge when professional qualifications are combined with experience, commitment and continuous learning. For Rwanda, developing such capabilities is vital to strengthening organisational performance, supporting innovation and building a competitive workforce. In a labour market defined by constant change, the greatest career advantage may be the ability to keep learning, adapting and growing.
