Rwanda's Formula 1 partnership is bigger than motorsport

Rwanda never ceases to amaze me. One week after Formula 1 announced the country’s ten-year agreement to host the F1 African Grand Prix from the early 2030s, I am still beaming with pride. What a moment for my country. What a moment for Africa. Formula 1’s return to the continent for the first time since 1993 has been generating headlines about motorsport, tourism, entertainment and investment. But to me, the bigger story is about perception, trust and Africa’s ability to shape its own narrative. To explain what I mean, let me take you back two months to Africa Global PR Week in Nairobi, where communications professionals from across the continent and beyond explored how we can shift Africa’s narrative from a dark continent to one that reflects its cultures, resources and human capital. One lesson stood out: we cannot market the continent before establishing its brand- the story the world holds about Africa. You see, Rwanda has spent more than thirty years shaping that story (nation branding) and building trust, one proof point at a time. From host nation to global stage On paper, Rwanda may not have looked like the obvious choice. Larger African economies might have held the advantage. Yet Rwanda’s selection shows that scale is not the only currency that matters. Consistency matters. Trust matters. Beyond hills, tourism, cleanliness and good governance, Rwanda’s summits, conferences and sporting, cultural and technology events have shown that when the country makes a commitment, it follows through. Each success has strengthened confidence among investors, partners, visitors and citizens. Rwanda did not simply win a Formula 1 bid; it accumulated the trust required to win it. Additionally, leadership has been central. Under His Excellency President Paul Kagame, Rwanda has consistently paired ambition with institutional discipline and turned vision into visible outcomes. That record matters because influence is not built by what a country says about itself, but by what it repeatedly proves it can do. The soft power opportunity Building and maintaining this influence is a concept many communicators are familiar with. The F1 partnership presents a soft power opportunity. Rwanda will be able further their efforts in how people see, experience and remember them. That is why communications must be part of the thinking from the beginning, not brought in at the end to package decisions already made. Communicators can connect the ambition to the people, identify where opportunities for impact lie beyond motorsport and align the different areas needed for quality delivery, ensuring that the story is supported by real outcomes. Turning visibility into lasting value Of course, greater visibility will attract greater scrutiny. People will be critical of different aspects of the project, and questions will emerge as plans take shape. That is normal for an undertaking of this scale. The task is to understand the concerns behind scrutiny, respond with facts (when necessary) and keep the conversation grounded in purpose and impact. This is why reputation building and issues preparedness must move together. Trust is not protected by avoiding difficult questions; it is protected by listening, responding with competence and showing consistency between what is promised and what is delivered. The work therefore starts long before the first car reaches the grid. Government, Formula 1, sponsors, tourism bodies and communities need a shared and credible narrative, with clear roles and a common understanding of what success should look like. Most importantly, Rwandans should feel like participants in the opportunity, not spectators to it. That requires more than media relations. It requires stakeholder mapping, clear governance, issues preparedness and shared measurement. We should be able to show not only how many people visited to watch the races, but how Africans gained skills, which businesses grew, how tourism changed and whether public confidence strengthened. More than a Grand Prix This moment is more than bringing Formula 1 back to Africa. It is about authorship: proving that African countries can shape global conversations rather than simply feature in them. Communicators must protect that authorship while opening the story to the people whose lives should give it meaning. In nation branding, the winning moment is rarely the announcement. It is the story people still believe years later because they have seen promise turn into proof. Rwanda has secured one of the continent’s most powerful storytelling platforms. The next decade will determine how well we use it.
