Three new basketball courts are set to open in Rwanda this week under Giants of Africa’s Built Within initiative, which aims to build 100 courts across the continent.

Implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, the initiative seeks to expand access to basketball facilities and create more opportunities for young people through sport.

With the latest additions, Giants of Africa will have courts in every province of Rwanda. Together, the three facilities are expected to serve more than 9,500 young people, students and community members, providing safe, high-quality spaces to play, learn and grow.

The handover ceremonies began on Tuesday at the University of Rwanda’s Nyagatare campus, where the new court will serve more than 600 community members, including university students and young people from surrounding areas.

On Wednesday, the celebrations will move to GS Marie Reine Rwaza in Musanze, a Catholic boarding school attended by 900 young men and women. The new court will give students a dedicated space to train, compete and build friendships beyond the classroom.

The series of handovers will conclude on Thursday at Igihozo St Peter in Nyanza. The court is expected to serve 8,000 people from the school and neighbouring educational institutions. The school’s motto, "To Know, To Love, To Serve,” reflects the values of service and community that underpin the Built Within initiative.

The three new facilities build on Giants of Africa’s earlier Built Within court openings in Rusizi District, in the Western Province, and the City of Kigali.

The Nyanza facility will also become Giants of Africa’s 14th basketball court in Rwanda, reinforcing the organisation’s long-standing commitment to the country’s young people and growing basketball community.

Co-founded by Masai Ujiri, president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks, Giants of Africa uses basketball as a tool to empower young people across the continent.

With the latest openings, the organisation will have built 53 courts across 16 African countries, creating safe, accessible spaces where young people can develop their skills, build confidence and grow into future leaders.
