The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced that Rwanda will host the next edition of the FIBA AfroCan in July 2027. The tournament, which exclusively features players competing in domestic leagues across Africa, will take place at BK Arena in Kigali from July 2 to 11, bringing together 12 national teams, including hosts Rwanda. Rwanda finished third at the 2023 edition in Angola after defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the bronze-medal match. Morocco claimed the title after beating Côte d’Ivoire in the final. DR Congo won the inaugural AfroCan in 2019, defeating Kenya in the final in Bamako, Mali. For Rwanda, hosting the tournament offers an opportunity for the national team to build on its bronze-medal finish in 2023 while competing in front of a home crowd. The event will also add to Kigali’s growing calendar of major international basketball competitions. Since opening in 2019, BK Arena has hosted several high-profile continental events, including the Basketball Africa League (BAL) and FIBA AfroBasket. Meanwhile, the four best-performing teams at the 2023 edition — champions Morocco, runners-up Côte d’Ivoire, third-placed Rwanda and fourth-placed DR Congo — have secured direct qualification for the 2027 tournament in Kigali.
