Rwanda is set to bring Formula 1 back to Africa under a 10-year deal, with the country preparing to host the first Grand Prix race in the early 2030s. As the sport prepares to race on the continent for the first time since 1993, here are five things that make F1 different from other motorsport races. Teams build their own cars Unlike some racing series where teams use standardised cars, F1 teams design and develop their own cars. They compete not only for the drivers’ championship but also for the constructors’ championship, which rewards the best-performing teams. The cars use advanced materials, including carbon fibre, and are designed to move quickly while maintaining grip and stability at high speeds. Engineering plays a major role in determining which teams perform best. Advanced technology is central to the sport F1 cars use 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid power units that combine a petrol engine with electric energy systems. The technology is designed to deliver high performance while improving energy efficiency. Teams also use computer simulations, wind tunnels and real-time data to improve their cars. Engineers monitor performance during races and help drivers make decisions based on changing conditions. Every race tests speed and precision F1 races are held on smooth, purpose-built or adapted circuits, where small differences in speed, braking and cornering can determine the winner. Drivers must handle high speeds, sharp corners and strong forces while making quick decisions. Pit stops, tyre choices and race strategy can also decide the outcome. This differs from competitions such as the Safari Rally in Kenya, where drivers face rough roads, changing weather and long stages that test both speed and a car’s ability to withstand difficult conditions. F1 is a global competition F1 races take place across several continents, attracting international teams, drivers, sponsors and fans. The calendar includes races in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Each race also requires a major logistical operation. Teams move cars, spare parts, equipment and staff between countries, often using air and sea transport. Organising a Grand Prix therefore requires significant planning and infrastructure. F1 races are shorter than endurance competitions An F1 Grand Prix usually lasts about 90 minutes, although the actual duration varies by circuit and race conditions. Drivers must maintain a high pace while managing their tyres, fuel use and energy systems. This differs from endurance events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where teams share driving duties and try to keep their cars running for an entire day. Rally competitions also test drivers across multiple stages, often over several days.
