Close your eyes for a moment and picture it. A Sunday afternoon in Bugesera, the red earth warm, the hills rolling away toward the district’s numerous lakes. Somewhere in the distance, a sound Rwanda has never heard on home soil: Formula 1 cars screaming off the grid at once. A few years ago, that picture would have drawn polite smiles. Today it has a date. This Tuesday, The formal announcement confirmed what many of us had quietly hoped for: Rwanda has secured a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with the first race targeted for the early 2030s. When I first heard Rwanda was bidding, part of me wondered whether we were dreaming too big. A small, landlocked country with no racetrack, chasing the most expensive sport on earth? Then I remembered who we are, and how often that kind of doubt has been proven wrong. The last time Formula 1 raced in Africa was March 1993 in Johannesburg. South Africa hosted 23 Grands Prix between 1967 and 1993, then the music stopped. Since 1993 the sport has raced in Bahrain and Baku, Singapore and Las Vegas, Miami and Qatar. It has crossed every ocean, yet stepped over Africa every single year. Lewis Hamilton put it bluntly: “the sport cannot keep adding races elsewhere while ignoring a continent the world has long taken from.” He was right. A sport that calls itself a world championship had a continent-sized gap in its map. Rwanda now has the chance to close it. We have done this before The sceptics who asked whether Rwanda could pull this off had clearly not been paying attention. This country has spent the past several years quietly building a reputation as the continent's most reliable host. Since the early 2020s, BK Arena has been home to the Basketball Africa League, a league which NBA-backed scouts and fans now plan their year around. Kigali also hosted AfroBasket 2021, the FIFA Congress in 2023, and every year the Giants of Africa festival fills the city with young talents. In December 2024, Rwanda welcomed the FIA itself, hosting its General Assembly and Prize Giving gala. That was the stage on which President Kagame formally announced our bid. Then came September 2025. The UCI Road World Championships came to Africa for the first time ever, and they came here. 743 riders from 108 countries raced through our streets, more than a million spectators lined the climbs, and broadcasts reached over 120 countries. Anyone who stood on the Kigali Wall that week will tell you about the loud echoes of joy! The riders had never heard anything like it either. Add to this the Visit Rwanda partnerships with elite teams like Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Aston Villa and others, and a pattern is plain. Rwanda does not just host events. We use them, deliberately, to tell the world who we are and we excel. None of this happened by accident. Behind the bid stands President Kagame. It is worth being precise about what his visionary leadership actually looks like, because it doesn’t regress into a single grand gesture. It resulted from a decision, years ago, to treat sport as economic policy rather than entertainment. Bringing the FIA's General Assembly to Kigali in 2024 and using that moment to announce the bid in front of the people who would decide it was also joined-up thinking. The same night he announced the bid, President Kagame celebrated something that may look small: a low-cost cross-car built by students at Rwanda Polytechnic using FIA blueprints. That detail tells you the vision is not only about hosting other people's champions. It is about growing our own engineers, mechanics and, one day perhaps, drivers. What a Grand Prix means for our economy Let us talk money, because that is where this project will ultimately be judged. Rwanda's tourism sector earned about $685 million in 2025, a record and 6 percent up on the year before, from close to 1.5 million visitors. The fastest-growing piece, the MICE sector, brought in $94.7 million last year, and the government's target is $224 million by 2028. A Formula 1 weekend is the single biggest event product in global sport. Nothing else on the calendar comes close. Think about what a race weekend actually involves. Tens of thousands of visitors, most staying several nights. Teams, media, sponsors and hospitality guests, many of whom are the high-spending travellers Rwanda's tourism model is built for. Every hotel room, taxi, restaurant table and tour guide in Kigali and Bugesera feels it. Many of those visitors will add a gorilla trek or a few days in Akagera before they fly home. These benefits start long before 2030. Building a circuit and its surroundings means years of construction jobs and contracts for local firms. Running it means permanent work for engineers, marshals, logistics staff and event managers, skills that transfer to every other event we host. This circuit will earn its keep year-round: national racing, driver training, testing, concerts, conferences and festivals. Then there is the global window. A Grand Prix is broadcast to hundreds of millions of people, every year. The cycling world alone reached an estimated 700 million viewers. That is advertising no tourism board could ever afford to buy. And, as Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire has argued, a race opens doors to the blue-chip companies that sponsor F1 teams, the kind of investors who look at a country and ask whether it can deliver. Rwanda has answered that question before. A Grand Prix lets us answer it in front of the whole world, every single year. “What brought us together is a shared conviction that Africa has the potential to elevate the quality of motor sport as a global and elite discipline. This partnership is long overdue. But it is a success and a milestone for the entire continent especially for the African fans.” – President Kagame Lights out, and away we go There is a phrase every F1 fan knows by heart. The five red lights glow, the crowd holds its breath, and then: lights out, and away we go. In 2030, those lights will go out in Bugesera. When they do, a child in every corner of the country will watch the fastest cars on earth race past and understand, without anyone telling them, that the world comes to Rwanda now. That is the real return on this investment, and no spreadsheet can fully measure it. Africa waited 33 years for this moment. Rwanda did not wait for anyone to hand it over. We went and got it because that’s how Rwanda works.
