The announcement on October 13 of a landmark agreement between Rwanda and Formula 1 to bring the Grand Prix back to Africa has generated excitement across the motorsport world, with African drivers and industry figures welcoming the development as a major opportunity for the continent. The 10-year agreement paves the way for Rwanda to host an African Grand Prix, with the first race targeted for the early 2030s. Africa last hosted a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix in South Africa in 1993. If Rwanda’s plans materialise, the championship will return to the continent after a 37-year absence, opening new opportunities to grow motorsport and strengthen Africa’s presence on the global sporting stage. Kenyan rally driver and 2026 African Rally Champion Karan Patel said he was proud to see Rwanda secure the ambitious project, describing the announcement as a significant achievement for the region. Patel pointed to potential opportunities in logistics, planning, safety and training, noting that the project could generate benefits extending beyond Rwanda to East Africa and the continent as a whole. Rwandan rally driver Christian Kanangire also welcomed the announcement, describing it as a dream come true for the country and its motorsport community. “The one thing I can say is that the word ‘impossible’ doesn’t have a place in Rwanda’s leadership,” Kanangire said. “As a rally driver, it is a privilege to witness this happening at this time!” ALSO READ: Rwanda set to welcome Formula One back to Africa, 30 years later Sébastien Houben, a MotoGP organiser, also welcomed the agreement, saying it reflected Rwanda’s ambition to pursue projects with international reach and transformative potential. “Seeing the Rwandan government join forces with the FIA to bring Formula 1 here by 2030 is not just a dream for motorsport; it is a demonstration of strength, ambition and engineering that reflects who we are,” Houben said. He added that the proposed African Grand Prix could accelerate technological, logistical and economic development while positioning Rwanda as a leading destination for major international sporting events. “This ambitious project will push our country towards new technological, logistical and economic heights,” he said. Rwandan motorsport personality Queen Kalimpinya also expressed excitement at the announcement, saying the prospect of hosting Formula 1 would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago. “I feel like I’m dreaming. If you asked me some years back if Rwanda was going to host a Grand Prix, I wouldn’t say I believe it. But here we are,” she said. The agreement envisages the development of a permanent racing circuit in Bugesera, near Kigali, with ambitions extending beyond the annual Grand Prix. The proposed facility is expected to support other sporting events, automotive activities and training programmes, potentially creating new pathways for Rwandans interested in motorsport and related careers. For the wider regional motorsport community, bringing Formula 1 to Rwanda would also make the championship more accessible to African fans, many of whom face significant travel costs and logistical challenges when attending races overseas. Beyond the spectacle of hosting one of the world's biggest sporting competitions, the project could help develop local expertise, create employment opportunities and strengthen the infrastructure needed to grow motorsport across the region. If delivered as planned, Rwanda’s Grand Prix would mark Formula 1’s return to Africa for the first time since the 1993 South African race, ending a 37-year absence and opening a new chapter for African motorsport.
