The addition of an African Grand Prix to the Formula 1 calendar in the early 2030s could give motorsport fans across the continent an opportunity to experience one of the world’s biggest sporting spectacles without travelling to Europe, Asia or the Americas. Following Tuesday’s announcement, however, one practical question is likely to be on the minds of prospective spectators: How much will it cost to attend a Grand Prix in person? With the proposed African Grand Prix circuit set to be built in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali, Times Sport explores the ticket options available at existing Formula 1 events and what fans can expect when the sport comes to Rwanda, whether they want to attend practice sessions, qualifying or the main race. The Las Vegas Grand Prix, scheduled for November 19-21, offers an example of how ticket prices vary depending on the day and type of experience fans choose. The three-day event features practice sessions on Thursday, qualifying on Friday and the main race on Saturday. Practice gives drivers an opportunity to test their cars and familiarise themselves with the circuit, while qualifying determines their starting positions for the race. Unlike most Formula 1 races, which take place on Sundays, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is held on Saturday. Organisers announced single-day general admission tickets starting at $50 (approx. Rwf73,000) for Thursday’s practice sessions, $99 (approx. Rwf146,000) for Friday’s qualifying and $393 (approx. Rwf579,000) for Saturday’s race. A three-day general admission package starts at $492, including taxes and fees. General admission typically allows access to designated viewing areas without an assigned seat, while grandstand and hospitality packages offer different viewing experiences at varying prices. For first-time fans, attending practice or qualifying can offer a chance to experience the sport beyond race day. Spectators can watch drivers test their cars, fine-tune their performance and compete for favourable starting positions ahead of the main event. These prices illustrate that there is no single cost for attending a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Fans primarily interested in the atmosphere and on-track action may opt for general admission, while those seeking a reserved seat and a clearer view of key sections of the circuit may prefer a grandstand ticket. General admission tickets These typically provide access to designated spectator areas around the circuit, which may include standing-room viewing platforms. They are often a more affordable way to experience a race, but spectators generally do not have assigned seats. The quality of the view depends on the location, the layout of the circuit and, in some cases, how early fans arrive to secure a good viewing spot. Grandstand tickets Grandstand tickets provide reserved seating in designated sections of the circuit. Depending on the location, spectators may have views of the starting grid, overtaking manoeuvres, challenging corners or the finish line. Prices vary according to the location of the stand, the quality of the view and the facilities available. Premium and hospitality packages These cater to fans seeking a more exclusive race-day experience. Depending on the package, benefits may include access to hospitality lounges, catering, entertainment, premium viewing areas and other additional services. Some of the most expensive packages offer a level of comfort, exclusivity and access beyond that of standard spectator tickets. Some Formula 1 organisers offer presales, early-bird promotions or other incentives to encourage fans to purchase tickets ahead of race weekend. However, the terms vary between events, and buying tickets early does not automatically guarantee a discount. For the 2026 Las Vegas Grand Prix, organisers offered eligible fans who placed a deposit during a specified promotional period priority access to tickets and waived fees. Public sales were scheduled to open later, with advertised starting prices available through the event’s official sales channel. The distinction is important: early access gives fans an opportunity to purchase tickets before general sales open, while waived fees reduce the additional charges payable. Neither benefit necessarily means the base ticket price is lower. The offer excludes certain standing-room areas and special seating packages. Unlike early-bird promotions, which are tied to the timing of a purchase, the Monaco offer rewards fans for buying tickets covering multiple days of the event.
