There comes a point in your career when certain decisions begin to feel instinctive. You walk into a meeting, listen to a challenge and quickly begin connecting the dots. Experience has taught you what to look for, which questions to ask and which mistakes to avoid. But what happens when someone asks you to explain exactly how you arrived at your recommendation? Practical knowledge develops through years of solving problems, making decisions and learning from mistakes. Over time, much of that knowledge becomes second nature. However, solving a problem and explaining how it should be solved are different capabilities. As professionals move into leadership, that distinction becomes increasingly important. Consider a carpenter who has spent thirty years working with wood. He may recognise good timber immediately; understand which joints will last and know where to make a cut. His judgement has been refined through experience. But when an apprentice joins him, instinct alone is insufficient. He must explain his reasoning, demonstrate techniques and establish standards. Otherwise, valuable knowledge remains locked inside one person’s experience. The same principle applies to business strategy and communications. Imagine an organisation requesting a campaign because it wants greater visibility. An experienced communicator might identify several solutions, including advertising, public relations or digital engagement. However, the more important question comes first: what business objective is greater visibility supposed to achieve? Perhaps the organisation wants to attract investors, enter a new market, strengthen customer trust or increase sales. Each objective requires a different approach. Communication should begin with understanding the business problem rather than selecting activities. A campaign can generate considerable attention without producing meaningful business value. This is where methodology becomes essential. A useful approach involves five stages: diagnosing the problem, defining objectives, designing the strategy, delivering the solution and demonstrating results. These stages are not revolutionary, nor should they become a rigid formula. Their value lies in creating a disciplined process connecting decisions to objectives and outcomes. Methodology also makes professional judgement more transparent. Instead of asking stakeholders to accept a recommendation because someone has twenty years of experience, it allows them to understand the evidence, assumptions and reasoning behind it. This strengthens accountability and makes it easier to evaluate whether the solution addresses the actual problem. The implications extend beyond communication. In many organisations, experienced leaders possess considerable undocumented knowledge. They understand customers, recognise operational weaknesses and anticipate challenges through familiarity. Yet when those individuals leave or retire, much of that institutional knowledge can disappear with them. This presents a challenge for African businesses seeking to grow beyond their founders. Many enterprises have been built through exceptional entrepreneurial instinct and practical experience. However, sustainable growth requires more than the continued presence of someone who knows how everything works. Knowledge must become transferable through processes, standards, documentation and systems that others can improve. There is also a leadership transition here. Early in our careers, we are judged by the quality of what we produce. As responsibilities increase, our value includes developing the capabilities of others. Leaders must explain decisions, establish consistent approaches and create environments where good judgement can be developed rather than borrowed from someone more experienced. This does not mean replacing intuition with bureaucracy. Experience remains valuable because not every situation fits neatly into a framework. The strongest professionals combine judgement with disciplined thinking, knowing when to follow an established process and when circumstances require adaptation. Perhaps professional maturity is not simply accumulating more experience, but making that experience useful to others. Expertise creates value when it solves problems. Methodology extends that value by making knowledge understandable, measurable and transferable. Experience helps us do the work. Methodology helps us explain it, improve it and teach others to do it well. The writer is a brand strategist working at the intersection of business, communication, and growth.
