Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy believes Rwanda has what it takes to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), saying greater representation from East Africa would strengthen the region’s chances of making a significant impact at the continental tournament. McCarthy and his Harambee Stars were in Kigali on Monday, October 5, where they played Rwanda in a FIFA international friendly at Amahoro Stadium. The match ended in a goalless draw. Both teams have six points. “I am pleased with the way Rwanda has started its AFCON qualifying campaign. They have talented players and are guided by a good coach, Stephen Constantine. It is a very strong team,” McCarthy said. The Kenyan coach expressed confidence that Amavubi can maintain their positive momentum and secure a place at the continental showpiece. “I hope they continue on this path and qualify for the tournament. Having more East African teams at AFCON would strengthen the region’s presence and increase our chances of competing successfully and even winning the competition,” he added. McCarthy also emphasized that the friendly was an important part of Kenya’s long-term preparations for AFCON 2027, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. “We need to intensify our preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations. We have already qualified as hosts, but that should not make us complacent,” said the former South Africa international. McCarthy also revealed plans to give several young players opportunities during the friendly as part of his strategy to build a competitive squad for AFCON 2027. Despite focusing on the future, McCarthy was keen to see his side deliver a positive performance amid growing pressure from Kenyan supporters following a series of disappointing results, including a 1-1 draw against Eritrea and a 1-0 defeat to Guinea in the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. For Kenya, the match against Rwanda provided an opportunity to rebuild confidence and continue preparations for hosting Africa’s premier football tournament in 2027. Meanwhile, Amavubi used the encounter to sharpen their preparations as they continue their push for qualification to the continental finals.
