Rwanda U23 captain Kennedy Hoziana has expressed confidence in his team's readiness ahead of the decisive second leg against Sudan U23 in the preliminary qualifiers for the 2027 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations. The Junior Wasps travelled to Juba, South Sudan, with a commanding 3-0 advantage from the first leg, played at Kigali Pelé Stadium on September 30. Despite the comfortable lead, Hoziana insists the squad remains fully focused and determined to complete the job when the two sides meet again at Juba National Stadium on October 6. “We approached the first match very well and managed to earn a convincing victory. However, the job is not finished,” Kennedy said. “We are preparing seriously for the away match, and we are ready for the challenge. Our objective is to win again because our focus is not only on qualifying but also on keeping alive our dream of reaching the Olympic Games.” The skipper attributed Rwanda's first-leg success to discipline, teamwork and the players' commitment to the coaching staff's tactical instructions. “I want to congratulate my teammates for the discipline and determination they showed in Kigali. Everyone followed the coach's instructions and worked hard for one another. That unity is one of our greatest strengths.” Hoziana believes the team's mentality will be crucial as they seek to protect their advantage away from home. “We are mentally strong, physically prepared, and ready to go again. Football is not only about what happens on the pitch. Mental strength is equally important, especially when you are playing away from home.” “We know Sudan will come out fighting because they need a result, but we are prepared for that challenge and we believe in ourselves.” The Rwanda captain also praised the supporters for their backing and called on Rwandans living in South Sudan to rally behind the team in Juba. “The support we received at home was incredible, and we are grateful to every Rwandan who stood behind us. Since arriving here, we have already felt a lot of love from our compatriots.” “We ask them to come to the stadium in large numbers and support us because their presence motivates us to give everything on the field.” Hoziana promised that the players would continue giving their all in pursuit of qualification. “We promise the fans that we will fight for the badge, for the country, and for everyone who believes in us. We are determined to deliver a positive result and make Rwanda proud.” The midfielder has carved out a unique place in Rwandan football history by captaining the national team at four successive youth levels, including the U15, U17, U18 and U23 sides. Reflecting on that achievement, Hoziana said leadership comes with a responsibility to set the standard for younger players. “It is a great honour to captain Rwanda at different age levels. Every time I wear the armband, I feel a responsibility to lead by example and inspire my teammates to give their best.” “We know what is at stake, and everyone in this squad is committed to achieving our objective.” Despite Rwanda's three-goal cushion, Hoziana warned against complacency and stressed that the team is approaching the return leg with the same intensity it showed in Kigali. “A 3-0 lead is good, but football can change very quickly. We are not thinking about the first-leg score. We are approaching this match with the same seriousness and determination as if it were still 0-0.” “Our focus is on producing another strong performance and securing qualification.” A positive result in Juba would see Rwanda advance to the next stage of the qualifiers as the Junior Wasps continue their quest for a place at the 2027 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations. With confidence high, discipline intact and the captain's message clear, Rwanda head into the return leg believing they have what it takes to complete the mission and move one step closer to continental success. “We respect our opponents, but we believe in our quality. If we remain united, disciplined, and focused, I am confident we can achieve our target.” “We are mentally strong, we are ready for the challenge, and we will do everything possible to make Rwanda proud,” Hoziana noted.
