Tom Cruise takes on new role in Digger Tom Cruise is returning to the cast in Digger, a new film directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Cruise plays a wealthy oil tycoon in the dark comedy, a role that takes him into very different territory from the action-heavy films he has become known for. Instead of another high-stakes action role, the film uses humour and satire to explore wealth, power and environmental concerns. The film also gives audiences a chance to see Cruise lean into comedy, while its unusual story and Iñárritu’s direction have drawn attention since its release. Digger opened in cinemas on October 2.
