The stage is set for a dramatic conclusion to the 2026 FIA African Rally Championship, with the Serengeti Tanzanian Rally, scheduled for October 2-4, serving as the final battleground of the season. Several leading crews arrive in Tanzania with realistic hopes of finishing on the podium, while the championship fight adds an extra layer of intrigue to what promises to be a fiercely contested finale. At the centre of attention is Kenya's Karan Patel, who heads into the Tanzanian showdown with 118 championship points — a commanding advantage as he seeks to reclaim the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) title. ALSO READ: Patel triumphs again in dramatic 2026 Mountain Gorilla Rally Patel strengthened his position at the top of the standings with a dominant victory in the 2026 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally in July. Driving a Škoda Fabia R5 alongside co-driver Tauseef Khan, the Kenyan has established himself as the driver to beat and will be aiming to turn his championship advantage into another major African rallying success. Patel's closest challenger is fellow Kenyan Aakif Virani, who has 85 points. Partnered by Zahir Shah, Virani will also compete in a Škoda and knows that a strong performance in Tanzania could put pressure on the championship leader. With the title fight still the main attraction, the battle between the two Kenyans will be one of the key storylines to follow throughout the rally. Nasser and Huwel eye podium challenge Uganda's Yasin Nasser is another driver capable of challenging for the podium. Nasser, who has 34 championship points, will be partnered by Allan Katumba in a Ford Fiesta Rally2. He brings valuable ARC experience to a field featuring several fast and proven crews. Tanzania's Ahmed Huwel, who has 25 points, will also attract significant attention. Partnered by Roheet Solanki, Huwel will compete in both the ARC and the National Rally Championship in a Škoda Fabia Rally2 evo. His knowledge of the local roads and conditions could prove valuable as he looks to challenge for a place among the leading crews on home soil. Manveer Birdi and Zubayr Piredina are another crew to watch in the ARC/NRC field. Their presence adds further depth to a competitive front-running group, while the battle behind the leading Rally2 cars could be equally intriguing. The entry list also features a strong ARC 2 and ARC 3 contingent. Uganda's Susan Muwonge, partnered by Musa Nsubuga, returns in a Subaru Impreza STI N12B, while Oscar Ntambi, with Puis Luggya, will campaign a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X in ARC 2. India's Naveen Puligilla, partnered by Musa Sherif, will compete in ARC 3, while Nsereko Godfrey completes the listed ARC 4 entries. In the championship standings, Patel's 118 points put him 33 points clear of Virani on 85. Jasmeet Chana sits third on 67 points, followed by Samman Vohra on 66. Rwanda absent from the Tanzanian round One notable absence from the Tanzanian round will be Rwanda. No Rwandan crew is set to compete in the final ARC round, with professional commitments and the high cost of participation among the challenges affecting local drivers. Rwanda has nevertheless played an important role in the 2026 championship, having hosted the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally earlier in the season. Rwandan drivers have also made their mark in the regional championship. Queen Kalimpiya secured podium finishes in ARC 2 in Kenya and Uganda, while Christian Kanangire also delivered a podium performance and finished at the top of the ARC 2 standings at the Mountain Gorilla Rally. Their absence in Tanzania means Rwanda will have no crew involved in the final ARC podium battle, despite the country's growing presence in regional rallying. ALSO READ: Rwandan drivers to miss final ARC round in Tanzanian Zambia and Burundi also missing The Tanzanian finale comes against the backdrop of a changing regional rallying landscape. Zambia will not feature in the 2026 ARC calendar. The Zambia Motor Sport Association (ZMSA) has faced financial and logistical challenges, including the cost of maintaining its FIA affiliation. Although the federation has expressed its intention to work with sponsors and the private sector to restore Zambia's place in the championship, there is currently no confirmed date for its return. Burundi is also absent from the 2026 international rally calendar. The country has reportedly lost the right to host international motor racing events this season amid concerns related to organisation, resource management, rally-stage preparation and compliance. The situation has affected Burundi's traditional rallying programme and left its competitors looking for opportunities to compete elsewhere in the region. All eyes on Tanzania With the championship reaching its final round, attention now turns to the Tanzanian stages. Patel arrives with the points advantage, Virani remains within striking distance, while a group of experienced crews will be looking to challenge the expected order. A championship leader looking to seal the title, a rival chasing the crown, home drivers eager to shine and a field determined to end the season on a high — the Serengeti Tanzanian Rally has all the ingredients for a compelling finale.
